Entrevista exclusiva a Ripperton

Raphaël Ripperton es un referente de la escena electrónica suiza. Luego de sus últimos cinco años de carrera en continuo ascenso es hoy en día un artista con mayúsculas. Fundador y jefe de Perspectiv Records, siempre a la vanguardia del House más fino, también supo editar por otros grandes como Border Community, Wagon Repair o Planet E.

Hace poco tiempo grabó su primer álbum, titulado Niwa, o Jardín en japonés. Excusa más que suficiente para hacerlo conocer otro jardín, el nuestro, y que allí nos cuente qué significa Niwa en su carrera, nos hable de sus habilidades para el canto e inclusive nos brinde una exclusiva: la nueva banda que está armando, entre otras cosas. Aquí la nota:

- Nos gustaría comenzar conociendo los momentos que considerás más importantes en tu carrera.

- Creo que Niwa es un buen inicio en mi carrera musical. Antes que el álbum hice cosas menores, remixes y EPs. Nada realmente fuerte o listo para una gran audiencia. Ahora me siento más cómodo, percibo que existe una audiencia para lo que haga a futuro. Niwa no es una pieza musical fácil, pero así parece y eso fue lo que intenté hacer. Estoy pensando en lo que ocurrirá en los próximos meses, siento que mi costado pop se está fortaleciendo, y creo que puedo perfeccionarlo y hacer mejor las cosas, pero esto requiere tiempo y paciencia.

- Hablando de Niwa, el disco tuvo muy buena recepción tanto en público como medios especializados, ahora que el trabajo está listo, ¿Qué podés contarnos de la experiencia de grabar tu primer álbum?

- La recepción fue fantástica, y fui el primero en sorprenderme y ponerme feliz. Trabajé duro en este álbum y quedé más que satisfecho al ver a la gente tomarlo como lo que es. Algo sin pretensiones, solo algo personal y orgánico, que aunque íntimo, ha dejado de ser mío. Desde que salió ya dejó de ser mi pertenencia, y me encuentro trabajando en el siguiente y pensando que ocurrirá luego de eso!

- Tanto el título como el sonido expresan un sentimiento calmo, orgánico y maduro, ¿Haber sido padre influenció en esto?

- Definitivamente. Ser padre es la experiencia más intensa que tengo en mi vida. Cambió todo, descubrí la felicidad en un sentido increíble. Fue bastante difícil volver a hacer música, quedé completamente vacío. Tuve que reconstruir todo desde el principio, probando nuevas direcciones y sonidos. Es por eso que estoy orgulloso de Niwa, este disco es la síntesis de mis últimos 3 años.

- Incluiste elementos como guitarras, vocales o sonidos orgánicos en tus últimos trabajos, y Niwa tiene bastante de esto, ¿Dirías que es poco frecuente encontrar este tipo de elementos en las nuevas producciones?

- Es una cuestión de gustos. No suelo interesarme en qué esta haciendo el resto, solo siento que debo incluir melodías y sonidos orgánicos en lo que estoy trabajando al momento, y eso es todo.
Hay muchos buenos álbumes nuevos como el de Caribou o Actress, y al  mismo tiempo encontrás toda otra música basada en loops de Ableton, completamente vacíos y poco interesantes, pero rankeando en los primeros puestos de todos los charts. Es triste pero no me interesa mientras siga encontrando buena música.

- En “Echocity”  agregaste vocales propias, contanos sobre la experiencia. ¿Fue tu primera vez detrás del micrófono?

- No, canté dos o tres veces antes. En “Prends-moi-avec toi” (track que fue remixado por Isolée en mi sello Perspectiv Records) y también en mi primer proyecto musical “Reasons”. Definitivamente carezco de talento para el canto, pero me gusta hacerlo :). Es bastante difícil expresarle a otra persona lo que uno quiere decir, es por eso que lo hice yo mismo, pido disculpas a sus oídos.

- El LP se editó tanto en vinilo como en CD, lo cual son buenas noticias para los coleccionistas.  Contános si sentís alguna diferencia a la hora de crear música que solo será editada en digital.

- Estoy más que contento con los resultados del packaging de Niwa, tanto del álbum como de los simples! Paul Swagerman del sello Green hizo un muy buen trabajo, y Joris Voorn y Edwin Oosterwal están en la misma frecuencia que yo para hacer cosas grandiosas.

Respondiendo a tu pregunta, no he editado solo en digital al momento. Se que soy afortunado pero sí, me es difícil aceptar que puedo estar trabajando durante meses en algo que solo será una colección de bytes. El vinilo como objeto me gusta muchísimo, intentaré hacer cosas en este formato tanto como pueda.

- Trabajaste con otros músicos para este registro, y en el pasado también tocaste en bandas, ¿Consideraste volver a formar una banda?

-Cosa curiosa, estoy empezando una live band para Niwa, tendremos algunas fechas a fin de año!
Vamos a trabajar con dos o tres vocalistas diferentes, y haremos arreglos de algunas canciones para agregar algo de material que terminé recientemente. Estoy muy excitado con este proyecto y espero poder salir de gira con la banda por un buen tiempo :)

- Para ir cerrando, contanos que tipo de música escuchás estos días.

En este momento me encuentro de vacaciones, así que estoy escuchando una gran mezcla de cosas! Desde lo último de Actress, a The National o Caribou, entre otros.

Raphaël Ripperton it’s a must of the swiss electronic music scene. After his last 5 years of career filled with continuous work and recognition, he is nowadays what we may call a major artist. Founder and chief of Perspectiv Records, always at the forefront of the finest house, he also signed releases for other big labels such as Wagon Repair, Border Community or Planet E.

This year he recorded his first album, Niwa, or Garden in japanese. Enough excuse to invite him to meet another garden, our latin garden, to tell us what Niwa represents in his career, make fun about his singing skills and also give us an exclusive: the new band he’s making, among other things. Here’s the note:

- We’d like to start knowing which moments you consider the highlights of your career so far.

- Think Niwa is a good start in my musical career. Before that I did minor things, remixes and EP’s. Nothin’ really strong and ready for a large audience. Now I feel more comfortable, I feel there is an audience for what I want to do in the future. Niwa is not an easy piece of music, but it looks like and this is exactly what I tried to do…   I’m looking forward on what will come in next months. I feel my pop side is coming more stronger. I guess I can do better, but it takes time and patience.

- Your last record had a great reception both in audience and press, now that the work is finished, what can you tell us about the experience of making your first solo album?

- The reception’s amazing, and I was the first surprised and happy. I worked hard on this album and I was more than happy to see the people taking it as what it is.
Something without any pretentious things, just something personal and organic. In the same time it’s not my album anymore. From the day when the album was released, it was not mine anymore. Now I’m working on the next one and thinking about what will come next!

- The album’s title and sound expresses a calm, organic and mature feeling. Being a father may have influenced this?

- Definitely. Being a father was the most intense experience in my life. It changed everything. I felt the happiness in an unbelievable sense. It was quite hard to come back to make music again. I was completely empty. I re-builded everything from the start, trying new directions and sounds. That’s why I’m proud of Niwa. This album is the synthesis of my last 3 years.

- There are organic sounds as vocals or guitars on your latest works, and Niwa has a lot of this. Would you say that it gets hard to find melodies and organic sounds on new productions nowadays?

- This is a question of taste. I don’t matter what the others are doing in general. I feel I have to put melodies and organic sounds on what I’m doing at the moment, that’s all.
There are so much good albums all around like Caribou or Actress recently and in the same time you have all these “functional ableton loop music” completely empty and un-interesting but trusting the top of the chart everywhere. It’s sad but as long as I find good music I really don’t care!

- You added some vocals from yours on “Echocity”, tell us about this experience, was this your first time behind the mic?

- No, I sung two, three times before. On “Prends-moi avec toi” (which was remixed by Isolée on my label Perspectiv) and in my first music project “Reasons”. I’m definitely not talented for that, but I like to do it :). It’s quite difficult to give to somebody else what you want to say, that’s why I did it by myself, sorry for you ears.

-Niwa got released as vinyl and also CD, which is great news for all the collecters out there. Is there a different feeling on you when making music that will be released only in digital?

- I’m more than happy with the result of the Niwa (album & singles) packaging and design!
Paul Swagerman at Green did an amazing job on this and Joris Voorn and Edwin Oosterwal are definitely in the same spirit than me to make superb things.
To answer you, I never did digital only thing till now. I know I’m lucky but yeah it’s difficult for me to accept that I can work for months on something that will be only collections of bytes. I like the vinyl object so much… I’m gonna try making beautiful things on this support as long as i can.

- You’ve worked with other musicians on Niwa, and in the past you also played in groups, have you considered working in bands again?

- Funny thing, I’m starting the Niwa live band for some gigs at the end of the year. We will work with 2-3 different singers and re-arrange some songs and add new materials that I did recently. I’m really excited about this project and hope I’m gonna tour this band a while :).

- What kind of music are you listening nowadays?

-I’m in holidays right now, so I’m listening a large melting pot of things! From the last Actress album, to The National or Caribou.
